De Vere Field, Cle Elum, WA (2W1)
Correctly identified first by Dave Brown
Halfway between Snoqualmie Pass and Ellensburg, the twin, crumbly little strips of De Vere Field and Cle Elum Municipal sit barely a mile or so apart, both just north of I-90. Like it's nearby sister strip, De Vere field is a little bumpy and is starting to break up in spots, but it's still perfectly usable. At 2020' long (with clear approaches) it's a bit short but quite adequate for most of us, unless things are hot and you're heavy. At 30' wide (30' skinny?), it's a bit narrow, but not too bad. The two Cle Elum airports make a good checkpoint when going over the pass, and would be a good option to consider if you suddenly ran into weather, or if things got disturbingly quiet up front.
The field apparently sees little traffic nowadays, but like so many small town strips now in slow decline, it once thrived in its own way. There is a small, now-shuttered FBO that once boasted a flight school, rentals, and fuel. The owner passed away a few years ago (it's still owned by the family); there's no fuel or any other services anymore.
Like so many strips I visit, this one feels a little sad and forlorn, like its days are probably numbered. If you like visiting quiet little backwater airports, I suggest you get to this one fairly soon, before it disappears from the charts.
