It's easy to visualize the route with the identifiers. For example, visit runwayfinder.com and paste the IDs into the box at the top of the screen (separate IDs with semicolons). The route will appear on the map, and you can zoom in and right-click icons to get complete information on each airport or other waypoint along the way.
A similar process works at Skyvector.com (click the Flight Plan button and copy the IDs, separated by spaces into the box). Again, you can see the route on either a VFR or IFR chart, and A/FD info for each waypoint is just a click away.
Similar deal at NavMonster.
Using official IDs avoids confusion with airport names and can be much more efficient when you want to get detailed information from a variety of sources.

I'm not the one planning this trip, but I like to live vicariously through others
so was trying to follow the thread. I gave up when the whole route was given via airport identifers-- it's just not worth the ten minutes or so it'd take to look them all up.
For those of us unfamiliar with the routes and airports being discussed, at least in aviation-speak, it would sure save a lot of thumbing through sectionals and/or airnav.com time if people would use the name of the airports (like the last quoted reference to fuel stops) in addition to or instead of just the identifier.

The easy way to see this routing is to highlight and copy the route you want to see. Then go to

, select flight plan and past the route into the box. The route will be shown.

Here's a basic route via the east side of the mountains that I've often used between KBFI and the Las Vegas, Tucson, and Phoenix areas:
KBFI DUANE VAMPS BEEZR YKM LTJ DSD URBIA LKV KLKV FMG RYANN O43 YERIN OAL BTY HIDEN 0L7 IGM DRK VPRVC BELLY WARTY KIWA
Good fuel stops include: KBDN, KLKV, O43 0L7 KBVU KIGM
Weather permitting, you can, of course, straighten out some of the doglegs. I typically file and fly mostly airways and take shortcuts when able, either VFR or VFR on top.
As others have noted, the route through California offers more places to stop, but the weather can be more challenging this time of year, and, of course, it's longer. Here's a typical flight plan via that route:
KBFI SEA OLM UBG EUG OED FJS RBL KOVE HNW HEKGO FRA TTE AMONT WIJYI PMD HEC DRK RADOM ZERLO KIWA
Good fuel stops include:

Eric. I punch the identifiers into Fltplan.com. not only gives the names but the distances & more. quick way to see how long my plane would take to make the trip. Dave

I'm sticking with my statement -- with dial-up internet, having to do all that cutting pasting entering scrolling etc that people suggested is a nuisance. But if you don't wanna put down the names, that's fine-- have a good trip anyway.

Those legs between GNG (Gooding ID) or JER (Jerome ID) and U52 (Beaver UT) will have issues with restricted areas -- surface to 58,000'.

Go to skyvector.com. enter in the identifiers with a comma between and the site will draw a line from airport to airport - very nice visual.

Having to do that reminds me of trying to talk with a bunch of eggheads and having to look up every third or fourth word in the dictionary in order to follow the conversation-- too much trouble.
I can see why non-aviator spouses get riled up when "pilotspeak" is used instead of plain english: shoot the ILS, fly to the VOR, listening for an ELT, etc.

I delivered my Arrow from Olympia to Flagstaff a couple years back and took the Oly to Yakima to Pendleton to Boise then down the the Utah/Nevada line to St. George before going over the canyon and then turning east. What a trip! Incredible scenery and views. Took about 10 hours as I recall.
