  • When I set my timing, why do I flush, then pee?

I'm knocking on wood as I type this as I have not....yet.  I try to be as careful as possible, always watching for not just other airplanes, but birds or when landing, any animals etc.

I bring this up because over the weekend an airplane struck a deer landing at Roche 07.  I won't put any specifics here other than the pilot and copilot are okay.  The airplane only had minor damage, the deer didn't make it.

Got me thinking how do I best avoid deer?

Typically, I land either after or enough before that I know I can be completely stopped before reaching the deer.  I've only ever seen deer shoot across, never run with or toward.  I figure I'm pretty safe to always keep doing what I'm doing.  Most of the time my wife is the copilot and also keeps an eye open for anything.

Not on landing, but once I had a dog run across the runway just as I was taking off.  I had just enough speed to hop over the dog, but not enough to stay airborne.  I settled back down on the runway and continued my takeoff roll.  We all lived to tell the tale (or is that tail).

Ate a Killdeer on takeoff, no big deal.  Almost got an eagle in the pattern, or he almost got me.  A friend screwed up on landing a taildragger but a deer took the fall for it ;-)

Ive had two encounters.

The first was at Tieton, saw a bunch of geese on the runway so i made a pass and scared them off. What I couldn't see with the morning sun in eyes was another flock in shadows alongside the strip. I was committed at the point i saw them. As they flew in front of me/beside me, I discovered i could fly slower than the geese. My split second decision was to contiue to land, thinking I would rather hit one at idle twenty feet off the runway rather than hit one at full power with poor go around options. Scared the crap out of me. I don't think i missed them by more than a couple feet but it was definitely the right decision.

My second was flying into moose creek idaho. There were deer at the halfway point on the short runway. I elected to land pass them. My thought was they wouldn't chase me. I was right and it was a non-event.

Deer often hang out at airports-- lotsa open ground so they feel safe, I guess.
I've seen a bunch of deer on the field at Diamond Point-
the local guys make a high-speed "deer pass" to chase them off,
but they're often right back out there by the time the airplane goes around the pattern & lines up to land.
One of the guys hit one in his Swift several years ago-- luckily he was unhurt, but a wing was pretty badly damaged.
I see lots of deer in the grass next to the runway at Oak Harbor.
I came close to hitting one on takeoff at Stuart Island years ago-
the deer came running out on an intercept course with me.
I was too fast to stop but not quite fast enough to take off...
full up elevator and luckily I mushed off the ground because I went right over the deer.
Thought I'd have to clean the upholstery after that one.

Elk on the runway at Astoria, before the perimeter fence was upgraded:

One of 'em took out a Lear 36 on a night takeoff at AST.  The airplane was destroyed by the ensuing fire.  Occupants were all ok; the elk not so much.

Yes, 2 years ago at Sisters eagle, OR.. Just as I touched down, a Deer and 2 Fawn came out of the brushes from my left to right and immediately onto the runway. I was already a bit hot, and fighting winds but the flaps were already down and I had speed, nose wheel was still up. I pushed throttle and fortunately light on Fuel at this point, Jumped right up (thanks to the mighty O-360) and could see them scurry away.

It was close. Had I hesitated any longer on the power up, I'd hit them.

and several years ago on approach at NIGHT. I hit a Flock of Seagulls ( not the band  :P ) It was a 172 at the time. I saw flashes of white and several thumps.

They all missed the prop and bounced off the lower wing skin. ( the thumps) Scared the hell out of me, but not a single scratch!

I've certainly smashed several birds with my planes at work, but the only other type of near-miss I know of was while teaching at Pierce County airport, when a coyote ran from right to left across the runway in front of me and my student just before rotation. He probably came within a dozen feet of either getting sliced by the prop or hitting the left gear on the 152, but managed to get across the centerline just before we reached him.

Sorry to hear that. The deer at Roche can be pretty bad. I was departing at night once when I saw a few deer hanging out on and around the runway (before starting the roll). Despite being in a turbo 206 that could make plenty of noise and having substantial lights on the thing, I had a heck of a time getting them to interrupt their meal and get the heck out of the way. They seemed pretty conditioned, unfortunately.

I was in a Cub, so this guy beat me to the taxiway:
