Madras for the August solar eclipse
« on: April 28, 2017, 12:42:19 AM »
I just booked a parking/camping spot on the airport for the eclipse happening on August 21st. The airport is opening up a lot of space for camp-under-your-wing as well as RV parking. The price for me for parking on the grass as well as two night's camping was $225. That may seem steep but hotels in & near the eclipse path have either been sold out for a year, or are charging in excess of $1000 per night. The airport sits almost exactly on the centerline of the eclipse, and has among the best odds for good weather for viewing. This will also save me from battling the horrific traffic expected in the area before & after the eclipse. If you're looking for a place to view the eclipse, call the airport manager to book a space.

I saw a newspaper article someone posted online and it sounds like they are expecting literally hundreds of people camping at the airport--
lots of them not in airplanes but in motorhomes.
I can just imagine the quality experience with that set-up.
Ugh.

Edit: Just re-read the article.

"MADRAS, Ore. - A large plot of land just east of the Madras Municipal Airport will hold 1,500 RVs for a late-summer special event like no other. You can stay for $125 a night or $300 for the whole weekend leading up to the Monday, August 21 solar eclipse"
Double ugh.

Alvord desert, unfortunately, isn't in the path of the eclipse.

I plan to be at 11,500' during the eclipse, flying along the path of totality.

you won't be alone, there will be others. I wish I could see it from a mountain top.

Flying along the path of totality won't appreciably lengthen the time the eclipse is visible unless your plane is very fast. The shadow is moving at about 1500 MPH on the East Coast, 1700 MPH in the Midwest, and nearly 3000 MPH in western Oregon.

So the SR-71 pilots can keep up for a while.   They could possibly catch the whole thing.

Why not go to Lake Billy Chinook State (5S5) just 11.5 miles SW?

It's a great place and is pretty quiet.

To my best estimation based on looking at eclipsewise.com and vfrmap.com, it looks like the S33 (Madras) will get 2min 2sec of totality while 5S5 will get 1min 50sec -- so IMHO could be a reasonable option.
